Mexican tenor Raúl Hernández is fast becoming recognized as one of the most gifted interpreters of the bel canto repertoire. He has recently debuted at the Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona and the Metropolitan Opera House in the roles of the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. He has performed Alfredo in La traviata at the Teatro Real de Madrid, Kentucky Opera, Manitoba Opera, Opera de Quebec, Opera Lyra Ottawa, Florentine Opera in Milwaukee, and Atlanta Opera, as well as Don Ottavio at Austin Lyric Opera and New York City Opera. He also deeply enjoys the subtle challenges of the “bad boy” Duke of Mantua which he has sung at New York City Opera, Kentucky Opera, Opera Pacific, Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, Glimmerglass Opera, Teatro de Bellas Artes (México), Orlando Opera, the Baden-Baden Festival (transmitted in Europe by the ZDF TV), Seattle Opera, and the Liceu de Barcelona.

 

Mr. Hernández has performed the Count of Almaviva (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) at the Teatro de Bellas Artes (México), Austin Lyric Opera, and Zürich Opera; Orombello in Beatrice di Tenda at Zürich Opera, München, Stuttgart and Dortmund with Edita Gruberova; Ernesto (Don Pasquale) in Düsseldorf and Guadalajara; Tebaldo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi for New York City Opera; and Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) at Edmonton Opera and Teatro de Bellas Artes. Other notable roles include highlights of Des Grieux in Manon at the Bolshoi Opera, Arturo in I Puritani for the Teatro Comunale di Bologna in Japan, the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova and München Stadt Oper; Rodolfo (La Bohème) at Glimmerglass Opera and Connecticut Grand Opera; Faust at the Shaker Mountain Festival; and Edgard in Lucia di Lammermoor at Glimmerglass Opera.. He has also sung Orombello in Dresden, Fenton in Falstaff at the Karajan Festival in Baden-Baden, Nemorino in Bergamo at the Teatro Donizetti, and Gennaro in Lucrezia Borgia at the Teatro Regio di Torino. He recently sang Don Ottavio for the “Festival del Centro Historico” in Mexico City and at a concert with The Festival of Arts of Palm Desert.

 

Mr. Hernández makes an easy transition from the operatic stage to the concert stage, and has delivered moving performances of Mozart’s Requiem, and Missa Brevis, Handel’s Messiah, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Verdi’s Requiem, and Orff’s Carmina Buranaand Catulli Carmina, among many others. As a recitalist, Mr. Hernández is especially known for his soulful renditions of the music of Latin American composers. He was born in Chapala, Jalisco, México.
