Lauded as “a smart singer” and described as having “a flexible voice with considerable sheen” (Music in Cincinnati, May 2009), Canadian soprano Katherine Giaquinto is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and began her performing career as a professional actress in Canadian film and television. She was the second place winner of the Palm Springs Opera Guild’s vocal competition in 2006, and has received top honors from UCLA, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and Pasadena City College. In October 2007, Katherine performed a week-long concert tour of Dr. Ian Krouse’s song cycle Invocation at the International Conservatoire Week Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia. Recent roles include Alice in Verdi’s Falstaff (both at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in 2009 and at UCLA in 2008), Tytania in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, and the title role in The Merry Widow. Recent concert performances include Delage’s Quatre poèmes hindous at the 2007 Aspen Music Festival, and Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 for the UCLA chamber music series. In the summer of 2008 Katherine attended the Wolf Trap Opera Studio and was a study cover for the title role in Handel’s Alcina. Katherine also recently made her New York recital debut singing Richard Strauss’ Vier letzte Lieder with pianist Christopher Allen in a collaborative recital/art exhibition with French painter Jean Mehdi Grangeon. Recent performances also include Thomas Pasatieri’s orchestral cantata Letter to Warsaw at the historic Plum Street Temple in Cincinnati in a concert commemorating the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and a return to her background as a professional swordfighter in the role of Clorinda in Monterverdi’s Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda at CCM in March. Katherine received her Master of Music degree from CCM in June 2010, under the instruction of Barbara Honn. She continues to be an active performer in both film and opera, and can be seen starring in the upcoming film The Ghastly Love of Johnny X, to be released in mid-2011.
